Introducing the Qilin 2.0 Battery
Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL) has recently unveiled its second-generation Qilin (or Kirin) battery, which promises to significantly extend the driving range of electric vehicles (EVs). With this cutting-edge technology, CATL aims to revolutionize the EV market, addressing common range anxiety among users.
Breaking the 1,000 km Barrier
One of the standout features of the new Qilin 2.0 battery is its impressive range—exceeding 1,500 km (932 miles) on a single charge under CLTC conditions. This marks a pivotal shift beyond the psychological barrier of 1,000 km, making long-distance travel more feasible for EV owners. To put this in perspective, the road distance from London to Barcelona is approximately 1,130 to 1,500 km depending on the chosen route. This means that a journey from the UK to Spain could be undertaken without the need for recharging, a significant milestone for electric vehicle adoption.
Technological Advancements in Energy Density
The Qilin 2.0 battery is built on a condensed (semi-solid) electrolyte technology, achieving an impressive energy density of up to 500 Wh/kg. This is nearly double the energy density of the best current mass-production batteries, such as Tesla’s latest 4680 cells, which stand at about 280 Wh/kg. The advancements in the Qilin battery showcase CATL’s commitment to enhancing EV performance and reliability.
