Introduction
The ongoing dispute represents a critical moment for Samsung’s workforce outside the chip division. A union representing these employees has petitioned a South Korean court to block a vote on a provisional wage deal, primarily citing an enormous disparity in the proposed bonuses.
Bonus Disparity
At the heart of the contention lies a glaring gap in bonus sizes among employees. The total package of bonuses and incentives for Samsung’s chip employees is estimated at approximately 40 trillion won. If the provisional wage deal is approved, the average bonus for 78,000 chip division workers could be around 513 million won, equating to about $340,000 each. In stark contrast, colleagues in other divisions are slated to receive a mere 6 million won, prompting significant concern within the union.
The Union’s Objection
The union has voiced its objections vehemently, arguing that the voting process has been fundamentally unfair. They maintain that many of their members were excluded from the vote, which undermines the essence of previous negotiations held between the parties. As the vote date approaches, uncertainty looms regarding whether this legal action will delay the voting process or affect the ultimate outcome of the wage agreement.
