At the grand unveiling of the Statue of Liberty, Lady Liberty herself was given a surprising invitation—to speak at the event. The organizers, eager to add flair, imagined the statue magically coming to life for a moment, just enough to say a few words. What could go wrong?
As the sun rose over New York Harbor, the crowd gathered in anticipation. Suddenly, the statue’s coppered foot twitched. Then a shaky finger jutted out. Gasps filled the air. Lady Liberty, uncomfortable in her bronze shell, tried to find her voice. But what she got was a gargled rattle—like a tea kettle refusing to whistle.
In her attempt to gesture grandly, her torch slipped from her grasp, clattering down into the water with a splash loud enough to startle every gull nearby. The crowd froze mid-cheer. Her gown—if you could call the folds of metal draped like fabric that—wobbled precariously, and it looked as if she might tip forward and faceplant into the harbor.
Her eyes—well, the glowing windows inside her crown—flickered nervously. With a sudden, dramatic creak, she attempted to bow. The pedestal protested with a series of ominous groans. Then, in an utterly unexpected twist, a flock of pigeons launched from beneath her robes, flapping wildly, as if escaping a statue-sized birdcage. The crowd erupted in laughter, realizing the “speech” had turned into a slapstick spectacle starring America’s most iconic statue—who, in the end, gave the best “leaf-peeping” show of the season with her feathery escape act.
