Introduction to Recent Maritime Incidents

In recent weeks, maritime activity in the Strait of Hormuz has been closely monitored due to incidents that highlight the complexities of navigational access in this vital waterway. Both events, involving significant vessels, are indicative of structured challenges that limit maritime operations in this region.
The Crossing of the Supertanker Kin A
The very large crude carrier, Kin A (Helga), is reported to have crossed the Strait after loading crude oil at Iraq’s Basra terminal. This marks one of only a dozen successful crossings for very large crude carriers (VLCCs) since early March. Kin A has a documented history of participation in “shadow fleet” activities, which raises concerns about compliance with international maritime laws and the overall transparency of shipping practices in the area.
LPG Shipment by Sarv Shakti
Another notable incident involved the Marshall Islands-flagged tanker, Sarv Shakti, which departed the Gulf carrying approximately 45,000 tons of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) bound for India. This shipment, contracted with the Indian Oil Corporation, represents the first instance of an India-linked vessel navigating through the Strait since the recent U.S. blockade on Iranian-associated ships took effect. Such deliveries are critical, especially given their significance for energy supplies in India.
Context of Restricted Maritime Access
Both incidents occur against a backdrop of stringent maritime restrictions. Currently, only select vessels seem to be authorized by Iranian authorities to navigate the narrow north lane of the Strait. Additionally, many ships are opting to disable their transponders for safety reasons, further complicating the overall shipping landscape. Since the onset of conflict, India has managed to facilitate the transit of merely eight LPG vessels through the Strait, a testament to the delicate balance of negotiations with Tehran.
