A significant and severe weather event is poised to impact the Central United States from Sunday through Tuesday. Forecasters are issuing rare and urgent warnings, particularly for Monday, which is anticipated to be the most volatile and hazardous day of the forecast period.

Expected Weather Conditions and Risks

The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has categorized Monday, May 18, with a level 4 out of 5 (moderate risk) for specific regions that include Wichita, Omaha, and Kansas City. The forecast details a high potential for strong and intense tornadoes, rated EF-3 or stronger, especially during the initial phases of supercell development. Additionally, the storms are expected to produce destructive hail measuring between 3 to 4 inches, comparable to baseball and grapefruit sizes.

Day-by-Day Breakdown of the Forecast

On Sunday evening, the highest tornado threats will occur from approximately 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. CT across eastern Nebraska, southeast South Dakota, and western Iowa, affecting areas including Omaha and Sioux City. As we move into Monday afternoon and evening, a widespread outbreak of severe weather is expected, with the greatest tornado risks stretching from central and eastern Kansas into southeast Nebraska and northwest Missouri. These supercells may later transition into a squall line, primarily posing threats from damaging winds ranging from 60 to 85 mph, with some gusts reaching hurricane-force.Tuesday’s forecast shows the tornado threat diminishing as a cold front moves eastward, though strong storms and damaging winds remain a concern from Texas to Michigan.

In conjunction with the severe weather, there is also a significant wildfire threat across the southern high plains, characterized as ‘extremely critical’ (level 3 of 3) due to winds gusting up to 50 mph and humidity dropping below 10%.
