This negotiation was initially broached during a meeting between President Prabowo Subianto and former U.S. President Donald Trump in February 2026.

The proposal has faced scrutiny from members of Indonesia’s People’s Representative Council (DPR). Critics argue that such strategic agreements must undergo parliamentary ratification. In response, the Indonesian government has assured that national interests will remain a priority and that any defense cooperation would fully comply with Indonesian law. Currently, while discussions are ongoing, any notion of a finalized deal is indeed premature, and the process is still in its infancy.
